Lycos, developed at Carnegie Mellon, was one of the first search engines on the Internet. Lycos has since transformed itself into a consumer portal and no longer uses its own search technology. Like Yahoo! and MSN, Lycos offers a variety of services including email, personalized sections, yellow pages and shopping. The Lycos search now uses AllTheWeb's backend. Lycos also displays featured sites in their search results from Overture and LookSmart. Lycos' parent company, Terra Lycos, also owns HotBot.com.
