The Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org), maintained by a community of over 50,000 voluntary editors, is the most widely distributed, most comprehensive and largest Web site directory on the Internet. The Open Directory was founded in the spirit of the open source movement, and is the only major directory that is free. There is not, nor will there ever be, a cost to submit a site to the directory, and/or to use the directory's data. The Open Directory data is made available for free to anyone who agrees to comply with its free use license.
Netscape administers the Open Directory Project as a non-commercial entity, and is committed to keeping it a free and open resource via its social contract with the Web community.
The Open Directory supplies their directory information to many companies on the Internet including, Google, Lycos, AOL and AltaVista.
Recommendation - Submit your Web site to the Open Directory Project
We recommend that you submit your Web site to the Open Directory Project. The Open Directory allows descriptions of 25- 30 words. Your description should include your practice areas and location, e.g.,:
Title: Johnson and Smith [Law Firm Name]
URL: http://johnson-smith-family-lawyers.com [Your Home page URL]
Description - Ann Arbor, Michigan [City, State] family lawyers practicing divorce, adoption, wills and estates [Practice Areas] in the Detroit metro and Washtenaw County region [Metro and County Areas].
For more information on writing a directory description, please see our Web Directories Section.
Once you have written your description, find the appropriate area in the Open Directory to submit your law firm's link. Do not use auto-submit programs for the Open Directory, but rather manually submit your Web site. For the law firm's Web site submission, start in the Society > Law > Services > Lawyers and Law Firms category and find the appropriate subcategory.
The amount of time to have a Web site linked in the Open Directory is relatively fast in the lawyers and law firm categories, taking no more than a few weeks (we can thank the editors of these categories for the fast response time). In general, it is best to submit your Web site to your first choice practice area and geographic location, as you are unlikely to have your law firm linked in multiple categories in the lawyers and law firm sections. The editors will check to see if your Web site is already in the directory.
If you do have high quality content on your Web site, you may be able to obtain additional links in other sections of the Open Directory. As with your law firm submission, you should first find the best place to submit your content and then submit the URL.
