Like Yahoo!, MSN and Lycos, Excite is a consumer Web portal offering a variety of services including email, personalized news and information, yellow pages and shopping. Excite was a full text search engine that morphed into the second most popular Web portal, just behind Yahoo! Unfortunately Excite merged with the cable service @home and the joint company went bankrupt. The Excite Web site is now owned by Focus Interactive, the company that owns iWon.
Excite's Web search is now a meta search, powered by InfoSpace, that combines the results of multiple search engines, directories and paid listings into one result set. The search engines include: About, Ask Jeeves, AllTheWeb, FindWhat, LookSmart, OpenDirectory, Overture, Sprinks, Google, Inktomi, Search Hippo, and Teoma. If your Web site is in any one of these search engines, then it should show up in the results. If you want to maintain a high ranking on Excite, you will probably want to purchase sponsored listings from Overture or ah-ha.com.
